In 1940, Fulco di Verdura purchased a collection of shells from the gift shop at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, introducing his first bejeweled shells a few months later. He favored "Lion's Paw" shells for their large size and knobby "knuckles." Today, Verdura continues to offer a selection of shell and shell-inspired jewels.

Born into Sicilian aristocracy in 1898, Verdura’s founder, Duke Fulco di Verdura, began his extraordinary career in Paris as a designer for Coco Chanel. After eight years with Chanel where he, most notably, created the Maltese Cross cuffs that became his signature, Verdura followed his passion for design to America in 1934.
